Sometimes people ask me how I achieved some of things I have. Or how I know about certain subject areas.
They seem to think its a particular action I’ve done or skill I have. A big step. But in reality it’s none of these. The real reason is quite simple.
The biggest factor in achievment is doing small, productive actions on a regular basis. Taking lots of little steps. This means setting a bit of time each day to self-development and learning and also to doing something productive for your business.
This is what people mean by the saying ‘How do you eat an elephant? One mouthfull at a time’. When you have a big task to complete, break it up into smaller tasks and make consistent, steady progress untill it’s done.
Time managment is crucial, especially if you are starting your venture while keeping your day job as you only have limited time in the day to allocate to it. It’s one of the first self development areas you should invest some time as you because then it will give you the most return. As part of this I recommend reading the book ‘Getting Things Done’ by David Allen.
A quick start do help manage your time is this. If something comes up that will only take a very short amount of time, then do it straight away and get it off your mind. If it will take longer and interrupt what you’re doing, then keep a list where you can write it down. Again this takes it off your mind because you know you have written it down.
Now this list isn’t just some scrap bit of paper. It can be a physical notepad, or a text file on your computer that you regularly check for tasks to do.
When you’re adding to the list write down these three things. First is simply what you want to do. Second is how you know you will have achieved this goal, ie the outcome. Third, write down the next simple action you need to take to progress on this goal. This way when it comes to work on the goal again, you will know exactly where to start, and not waste time wondering what you need to do next.
If you can be more efficient building your business, then you can build a more successfull business faster and have more time to do the things you really want.
