More distressing news for our Network Marketing industry….

Reading through my good friends – Rod Cook’s M/L/MWatchdog.com and Lou Abbott’s M/L/MTheWholeTruth.com – I see some disturbing revelations – - –

‘Fruta Vida’- GONE – Nutritional Wellness (M/L/M) company CEO, Anthony Shaw. sent out a brief but heart-stopping letter, where he simply said – “Due to economic issues at this time, it has come to my realization that we are no longer able to offer the Network Marketing compensation model for our distributor family.” BAM!

Our hearts go out to all those Affiliates who will see their checks stopped in a heart-beat. Many have ‘invested their lives’ into building an increasing cash flow (with hopefully, a retirement income at some point) – only to now see it all “go up in flames”. It’s gives us a sickening feeling in the pit of out stomach, not only due to the financial turmoil it brings – but also, the emotional toll it takes on Affiliates and their families.

DRA – We on the Board Of Directors of the Distributor Rights Association see this happening all the time in our industry, sadly – along with (wrongful) dismissals, needless lawsuits and other major disputes. It is a real tragedy. We try to educate Distributors ‘ahead of time’ to the minefields they should be aware of – it’s an important part of our global mission.

Just look at what has happened recently with – YTB – Univera – Qivana – Zrii (and many more) – these are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ when it comes to upheavals in our industry. These events can happen with ANY company in our industry – ANY company.

The REALITY - Whenever Home Biz entrepreneurs simply “join an M/L/M” – they put themselves at immediate risk. I have written about this on Forums for years. The problem is – as good as Network Marketing is (and it is) – the fact remains – they have all the control – they make all the decisions – they have all the the power and they own all the assets ((including our own downlines!)).

Policies & Procedures (P&Ps) - This Legal Agreement, which we all sign when we associate with any M/L/M company is (amazingly) seldom ever “read” – let alone “studied” first. It contains the language that truly “sets the tone” for the whole company. In addition to setting out their rules – this document tells a great deal about the company owners – their mission, their integrity, their heart. Of all the (many) critical factors to consider when ‘evaluating’ ANY Network Marketing company => the P&Ps are #1 – period – period.

It is also important to realize that these documemts are drawn up by the company’s bank of attorneys – to protect the COMPANY – not the Affiliate. Not that this is a ‘bad’ thing ((we want the company to be protected, because that helps all of us)) – but it’s entirely “one-sided” in my opinion (having studied a great many P&’s).

And hence, the crucial need for us to “position” ourselves in the correct way – not only to ‘protect’ ourselves from these pitfalls – but to ‘empower’ ourselves for real success and prosperity in our businesses.

Home Business OWNERSHIP? - When we “join an M/L/M” – and agree to their P&P, we become what they label as ICs (Independent Contractors). Let’s not be fooled – this is strictly for “income tax purposes” – so that we are not treated as “employees” (where tax is withheld at source). It’s impotrtant to understand that we are strictly “commissioned Sales Reps for that company’s products and services” (again, this is not a ‘bad’ thing – it’s just the reality).

We are not IBOs (Independent Business OWNERS) – not until we take the steps to position ourselves for that – which includeds – SELF Branding + building our OWN lists + developing MULTIPLE income streams as taught by Ann Sieg and Mike Klingler at Renegade University/Professional – Mike Dillard at Magnetic Sponsoring – Joe Schroeder at Starlink Nation – and other leaders who are teaching Online + Offline Attraction Marketing.

As a Financial Advisor, a Business Consultant and a Home Biz Coach – I still feel that Network Marketing offers the asbsolute finest ‘business model’ on the planet – bar none. But we need to be careful to treat our involvement in it – as simply one (important) piece within our overall “business infrastructure”.

Anyway – just needed to get this ‘off my chest’.

The Rough Draft

Recently, TheFactsAboutYTB.com (not to be confused with TheFactsAboutYTB.net), was updated to include an “open letter” from Scott Tomer to the masses on the front page. As with any important correspondence, the final product likely went through several revisions. The following iteration seems like it might have been one of the previous drafts:

The flurry of negative articles surrounding YTB’s settlement with the California Attorney General is not a surprise to me. I have accepted the fact that our critics take great pride in authoring factual articles about our company. The only way anyone could claim “YTB barred from California,” as one headline read, is to completely read the terms of the settlement, which we are hoping you don’t.

Open-minded people with legitimate agendas designed to support their position or promote a competing business must think they will tear us down. Andy Cauthen, our President and COO, recently sent a letter to our home office staff and leaders of our sales force (but not our sales force or the RTAs because we don’t want them to know too much) addressing these less than honorable competitors.

He said, “Critics have a motive; no one criticizes just to criticize. They are paid something. It’s a self-indulgent motive. They are looking to protect an industry that they have spent years building that we are trying to rape, pillage and plunder.

“We hate their methods and strategies; they take all the facts and we don’t like it when they show that we are less than ethical. They actually enjoy it because slowly but surely, people are beginning to notice that they are right. We have lost a ton of RTAs and Reps and right now we can’t sell most cruise lines and we shouldn’t even discuss IATAN.”

So why don’t we respond directly to our critics? Andy answered, “Because they are right. We are in enough trouble as it is, and we certainly do not want to go on the record.”

He summed it up perfectly by quoting the old farmer’s saying, “When you wrestle with a bull, sometimes you get the horns.”

No one seems to care what you do or how you do it as long as you’re ethical, legal, and compete fairly. But as soon as your true operations are discovered, be prepared for the critics and naysayers to begin spewing the facts and truths about you.

For all those critics, skeptics and predictors of doom for YTB, we aren’t buying your story because we know who we are. Besides, we just put out an incentive to recruit some more people to pay us $50 a month.

We are office, factory and construction workers, educators and pastors. So we do play the God card a lot.

We are farmers, students, artists, mortgage brokers, Hall of Famers, military personnel, doctors, nurses, and yes, many of us are convicted felons—but that’s ok as long as they can recruit and have someone send in a $50 check each month.

We live in big cities and small towns all across America, but mostly in homes that are under threat of foreclosure, so we prey upon those people to send us the $50 a month and lead them to believe that YTB will save their home. We are neighbors, best friends, co-workers, parents, veterans, coaches and volunteers. Well, only one Coach, and he has God at his side.

We are involved in our schools, our communities and our churches—these have been proven to be fertile recruiting ground as long as you can portray that you are making a LOT of money. We may have different political views, but we agree that America is a great place to live, work and raise families—and we all adore Coach and appreciate the opportunity that he had to make $3 million dollars a year and we make $120.

We are dreamers in action. We have an average IQ of 75. We don’t expect a hand-out, a bailout or someone to do it for us. We are motivated, self-starters who are investing in the Coach’s latest scheme in the hopes of providing a better future for our families. And whether you like it or not, we’re going to continue building our businesses with YTB in spite of you because we really could not care less about travel, and Coach wants more money.

Are we perfect? Hell no; but we will make sure that everyone that pays us $50 a month thinks we are. Have we made some mistakes? Mistakes is such a harsh word; we prefer to say that we made corrections. We recently emerged from a dark cloud of suspicion about our future when we settled the California Attorney General lawsuit—if you read the press release we sent out, stop there. Please don’t read the actual settlement because you may see that we cannot afford the fines, and well we just don’t know how the heck we can recruit in California when we have to tell people they will likely lose money. Maybe we can mention that really fast and quiet like at the end of the car commercials on television. While some have reported the end of YTB, we believe it is the beginning of the next phase—one that will continue to take money from people foolish enough to give it to us. We will continue to find free things to add to your “bizness” and hope that you don’t realize they add no value. We will continue to operate just under the law in all states until we are stopped.

Your disdain for us is abundantly clear, and you have proven you will keep reiterating facts that we must then try to cover up. You may not see our response to your criticisms in print or hear our voices in protest, but we are working hard to get as much money from the remaining RTAs that we have and are preparing to move on. As Andy Cauthen so aptly put it, “There’s never been a statue erected to a critic, but we did build a helluva nice one for the convention last year. And by the way, we thank you for allowing us to filter the money for that into our secret little company.”

More Than Enough To Go Around

There’s no question we are in the midst of hard times. Add to the economic trouble, the questionable solutions offered by Congress and the “financial experts”, the rabid Presidential race – we are getting our ass kicked.

Pain. Is there anyone you know that isn’t experiencing some sort of pain?

I’m not trying to exploit the demise that we are suffering. Forget the sales pitch for a moment.

How many people that are currently experiencing financial trouble COULD you have helped IF only you had talked with them about your business project? Perhaps you market a health & wellness product that could provide some relief for even a few minutes a day – but you permitted yourself to be distracted.

What about your own situation? Some people are masochists, I guess.

I do not for a moment believe that MLM will provide the complete solution for what may be ailing us.

I do believe however that starting and building your own MLM business may help to cover some shortfalls. With the proper focus, I know it can provide a pathway toward your personal freedom and independence from many of the forces that are tearing families apart.

I do not care whether you join any of my projects. I’m not writing this in an attempt to recruit anyone. I am promoting the notion that everyone should seek out a program that will allow them to start right away – a program that will meet their requirements in terms of enrollment, products, compensation, training, and philosophy.

None of us can afford to wait for the economic situation to remedy itself. Regardless of whom may be to blame, I do not think it wise to wait for our politicians to construct an equitable and fair solution.

Please. This is far too important to ignore. I don’t ask you to sign on with me. At least, look at what the marketplace has to offer and, if you haven’t yet, put some sort of plan in motion.
